Grasshopper was set up in early 2013. We began with the idea of starting a kid’s festival but decided that we should begin initially by creating events and projects for kids and families.

We spent what seemed like an eternity thinking of the right name for the company and wanted something that was sparky, energetic and positive. After a number of false starts with Jellyfish (too stingy), Firefly (too creepy) and Wonder Lab (too sciency) we came up with Grasshopper.

For the first time we got positive reactions from everyone we tested the name on. When we investigated further we discovered that the grasshoper is a symbol of good luck, creativity and moving forward. That was it – we ‘d found a name!

Now all we needed was a logo, an identity and a tagline which is where mult-talented designer Graham Thew came in. Graham got to work and came back with a number of different options.

First idea was to use a grasshopper illustration we commissioned but as a logo we felt it was a bit too obvious. We still love the little character though and plan to use it sometime, somewhere in the future.

These two options featured great colours and cool fonts but we felt they weren’t quite child-friendly enough.

Next up was the speech bubble series which had a monochrome and a colour version.

Finally we cracked the logo with a blend of a modified speech bubble, more colourful font and a little nod to the grasshopper with a funky, antennaed G.

Meanwhile, our tagline had more incarnations than the name and the logo combined and was by far the most difficult part of the whole design and conceptual process.

After many versions and much deliberation we eventually decided on Big Adventures For Little People which was sparked by the Dr. Zeuss quote “A person’s a person, no matter how small.”
